After the curator, Pasi Granquist of the Kotka
International Video and Electronic Art Festival Finnland, had seen the
enterable multi-media installation im rot by Marius D. Kettler at the
Walden Kunstausstellungen, he invited the artist to take part in the
KIVEA Festival. In response, Kettler conceived the work actus torus,
which was shown at the festival in Finland.
actus torus~ is now showing in Berlin for the very first time.
As with im:rot, warten auf rot, actus torus~" combines sound, sculpture and painting to create an enterable space installation in which art and natural science fuse. This work deals with the phenomenon of radioactivity a subject seldom thematised in art. Actus torusŽ is a self-synchronising and adjusting installation (M.D.K.), which is certainly able to communicate with itself without any intervention from the outside. After a while, the sculpture begins to settle, sound patterns form by means of guided chance. Without any intervention by computers or mechanical processes, a succession of sounds evolves from a system of loudspeakers, transmitters and receivers metals, which start moving and trigger sound-events, as well as the radioactivity of rock measured by Geiger counters and rendered audible.

actus mundus is the second installation (after actus torus ~ ) from the series " Tori and the abstraction and nature."
The acoustic component in the “actus mundus” installation is the sound modulation which derives from the seismographs, where sounds come from the seismographic activities of the earth ( from six continents : North America, South America, Asia, Europe, Africa , Australia) resulting as vibrations in the installation.
Unlike actus torus, where the subject matter questions the fear of natural radioactivity, here in “actus mundus “, it is the tempting suspenseful moment while waiting for an acoustic sensation, which would mean that we are hoping for an earthquake as entertainment. The recipient can experience sound with all senses witnessing the “normal” activities of the earth transcribed into sound. In this installation the main sensation demonstrates earths activity’s. The earth is just a place - it is not far away. The painting itself is also a capturing part, where the origin of sound is left unquestioned. Sound utilized as a distraction, in a world focused on the visual.
In cooperation with six seismographic institutes from six continents, data will be transferred live online from seismic activity. This data when converted into sound, makes it possible to return the data back to the sounds from where they originate (induction). With these sounds an atmospheric sound scape will be created.
The installation is set up in a space where the construction is made of six paintings that are arranged around the central point where the torus is divided into three parts. Each of the six sound - paintings transmits the sound from seismographs from separate continents .These pictures function as the membranes of the transducer. In the center of the installation, three seismographs are positioned ( north - south , east - west , and vertical ) they register the vibrations in the space made by the visitors in the installation, adding a supplementary overall sound. The installation is mounted on a wooden floor so that the sound of the visitors footsteps make “the real sound “ this is an additional percussive element. The tripartite inverted torus is painted on the exterior. The abstract painting is a visualization of sounds and themes ; vibration - movement - resonance . Here the pictures function as large membranes that amplify the sound.
